CAT CONUNDRUM

When my cat sits on my lap, and I’m wearing shorts, something odd happens if he starts washing his forearms : he always continues on seamlessly to my hairy upper legs. Is he doing this as some kind of favour towards me, like the social grooming cats indulge in, or is it that he just can’t distinguish where his body ends and mine begins?
